How to choose
Flow carries food to corals, keeps detritus suspended for export, and prevents dead spots. Propeller pumps make wide, turbulent flow. Gyre pumps make broad, laminar flow that suits fleshy LPS. Reliability varies a lot by brand in owner reviews, so cleaning access and warranty support matter.
- Soak pumps in citric acid or vinegar a few times a year to remove calcium buildup.
- Check that the magnet is rated for your glass thickness.
- Two smaller pumps on a random or alternating mode usually beat one big pump.
For the science behind it, read our Coral types and care guide.
How we review: we paraphrase what owners report in retailer reviews and forum threads, plus picks and test results from BRStv, Reef2Reef discussions and published reef chemists. We only show a rating when we verified it at the source, with the date we checked. We don't invent scores or quotes. Prices and stock change, so check the retailer.
